The Florin was first issued during the reign of Queen Victoria, and was introduced as an early trial for decimal currency. Valued at one tenth of a pound, the names ‘Centum, Decade and Dime’ were suggested before the name Florin was formally adopted.
The controversial ‘Godless’ Florin
First issued in 1849, the original Florin was withdrawn after just 2 years because of a controversial design feature.
The design excluded the abbreviation of Dei Gratia (Latin for ‘by the Grace of God’). In a society where religion was extremely important, it caused outrage and the coin earned the nickname of the ‘Godless Florin’.
