1841 Penny Red and Queen Victoria Silver Threepence
The Penny Red is one of the most iconic postage stamps in British history, succeeding the legendary Penny Black. But just a few months after the world’s first ever postage stamp was released, issues surrounding reuse and fraud came to light.
Because of the Penny Black’s dark colour, it became difficult to see the postmarks which meant it could be easily reused.
As a result, Rowland Hill initiated the design and production of the Penny Red. This saw the stamp’s colour change from black to red-brown, meaning postmarks could be detected more clearly.
And today, you can secure an 1841 original with three clear margins alongside a genuine Victorian Silver Threepence in a luxury presentation case.
First struck in 1838, just three years before the Penny Red, this British Threepence features the first 'Young Head' portrait of Queen Victoria by William Wyon.
The first Silver Threepence coins featuring the young Queen are some of the most sought-after coins in numismatics, representing the beginnings of Victorian Britain.
Considering both of these issues are almost 200-years-old, stock is extremely limited.
